Hounds for Hadley 2009: A Barking Good Time

On Saturday, October 24, The Hadley School for the Blind held its 4th Annual Hounds for Hadley Dog Walk in Winnetka to raise awareness and funds to support the school’s free distance education programs for individuals who are blind or visually impaired and their families, including a course on guide dogs.

More than 100 members of the North Shore community and their dogs strutted to support Hadley. Many attendees joined in on Hadley’s Halloween fun by dressing in costume.

“Hounds for Hadley is a terrific opportunity for people in the school’s hometown community to learn about our services and walk for a great cause,” said Hadley’s senior vice president Dawn Turco, who walked with her dog, Tatum.

The two-mile walk through the streets of Winnetka raised more than $15,000, which will help Hadley provide distance education courses to over 10,000 students around the globe. People with guide dogs joined in on the walk along with representatives from Greyhounds Only, Inc., a nonprofit rescue organization serving northeastern Illinois. More than 20 local sponsors, double that of previous years, also participated.

Since 1920, Hadley has provided tuition-free distance education to people with visual impairments and their family members around the globe. The school also provides courses to professionals working in the blindness industry at a modest fee.

Hounds for Hadley was presented by Harris Winnetka and the Hadley Young Visionaries. To see photos from the walk or make a donation, visit www.hadley.edu/hounds.
