David Yurman would be the perfect North Shore neighbor. His down-to-earth, hard-working, family-centric demeanor fits right in. Who knew that was possible with a New York City design mega-star?
I spoke with him during a benefit at his Oak Street store for one of our Make It Better partners, the American Cancer Society.
Yurman speaks with the warmth, common sense and grounded attitude that is common to many self-made businessmen. His eyes twinkle behind his elegantly simple wire-frame glasses as he speaks about his family-owned business.
His wife is his partner, his son is in charge of David Yurman For Men products and his niece runs the NYC flagship store.
Yurman is as fit, handsome and traditionally dressed as most North Shore men too. Yurman attributes his success as much to good management skills as to his popular design esthetics.
"I started my career as a sculptor. There were 5 or 6 sculptor's assistants in New York City at the time. I was the only one who was able to manage projects," Yurman explained during the ACS event.
"My interests just evolved from large scale sculpture to more refined jewelry."
Yurman’s conversation with women wearing pieces of his jewelry which they had collected over the years at the event highlighted Yurman's passion for his work and the passionate following that he has developed.
He grinned broadly as he identified the style and dates of each piece the women wore. Some of those bracelets and necklaces were decades old - but they remain forever stylish. As will their creator.
