It doesn’t have to be just for breakfast today—when it’s National Doughnut Day, you can eat one anytime you want.
This annual event, held on the first Friday of June (June 3rd this year), has Chicago roots. The Chicago Salvation Army began it as a fundraiser in 1938, part in effort to assist people during the Great Depression, and part to honor the Salvation Army “Lassies” of WWI, who served doughnuts to soldiers.
Caught the craving yet? Here’s a few great places on the North Shore we love:
Bennison’s Bakery
Evanston
Deerfield Bakery
Deerfield
Bent Fork Bakery
Highwood
Three Tarts Bakery
Northfield
Schlegl’s Bakery and Café
Lincolnwood
Wildflour Bakery and Café
Lake Bluff
If you’re feeling really creative, you can also try to make them at home.
And if baked goods have always been the bane of your existence because of a gluten-free diet, you can try this cookbook from North Shore resident Kelly Rudnicki.
