Transitional Jackets and Sweaters: Layering Looks

Saying goodbye to summer is never fun, but at least the excuse to start layering eases the pain a bit.

This fall you can take your pick: Go girly with tailored, romantic pieces in soft wools and velvet, or find inspiration in your man’s closet. Menswear is big, and we mean that literally: Oversized blazers, sweaters and military-wear is the modern proportion, and extremely comfortable to boot!

Cream Confection Jacket
Stay far from the crowd with this Edwardian number in a dusty camel hue, a popular neutral for autumn (it also comes in black and cream). Being all covered up never looked so sultry.

$178, anthropologie.com

BCBG Oversized Cardigan
We’re loving this season’s comfy, oversized styles. Just make sure to balance the volume: Wear with slim pants or shorter skirts and tights, or cinch the waist with a belt. We like this cashmere option in fall’s other hottest neutral, gray.

$198, bcbg.com

Elizabeth & James Sharp-Shouldered James Blazer
That’s right, the shoulder pad is back. But this time it’s far subtler than its ‘80s linebacker cousin. Defined shoulders and a straight cut through the torso actually make you look slimmer, and a longer length covers any booty issues. Be on the lookout for these “boyfriend blazers” with ¾ length or ruched sleeves, which keeps it looking feminine and modern.

$395, bloomingdales.com

Dolce Vita GI Jacket
Military-inspired styles are once again hitting the streets. This anorak is sporty chic, whether you’re running errands in your yoga gear or hitting Michigan Avenue in dark denim and a colorful, printed scarf.

$178, shopbop.com

BCBG Shirred-Back Cardi Wrap
Dolman sleeves are an elegant element on this cardi. Wear it loose or wrap and pin it with a brooch.

$148, bcbg.com

J. Crew Velvet Ruby Jacket
Velvet is back in a big way this fall. This charmer of a jacket gives a soft whimsy to jeans, and comes in a few rich colors. Finish off the look with a platform heel or bootie to add a little edge.

$168, jcrew.com

Mara Hoffman Motorcycle Jacket
Biker chic goes feminine in this luxe take on the motorcycle jacket, made from a soft gunmetal boucle. Keep it minimal with a short skirt or skinny jeans, or use it to toughen up a flouncy party dress.

$425, She Boutique
